Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman, 275 pages

The description for this book, that caught my eye, went something along the lines of "Rory Hendrix has continually checked out the Girl Scout Handbook, reading every page and trying to follow all the guidelines, even though there isn't a single girl scout troop in her trailer park community." I started this book thinking it would be a funny read, never expecting it to be a deeply moving story, heart-wrenching at times, and one of the best books I've read so far this year.
